Why the Name

The Great Plains wolf ranged open, exposed terrain from the Canadian prairies into northern Texas. Its prey collapsed when the bison were wiped out, and it was trapped, poisoned and hunted for its pelt until it was gone from the plains. The last one there was shot in 1922. It was declared extinct in the wild in 1926.

The ground didn't get any safer once the wolf was gone. It just stopped having anything watching it.

Many organizations are in that position with the systems they run: exposed, fast-moving, nothing keeping watch by default. Vigilance was never automatic, even here. It has to be built on purpose, by someone who understands both what's hunting and what the terrain demands.
